Libyan militia hit helicopter carrying ballots, kill one

The Libyan army says one person has been killed after gunmen targeted a helicopter carrying ballots on the eve of the country’s first democratic elections.

The incident is the latest outbreak of violence in Libya after the 2011 revolution, with armed militia closing three oil refineries in the eastern part of the country earlier in the day.

On Saturday, Libyans will go to polls to select members of a General National Congress, which will appoint a new government and a panel to draft a new constitution. The National Transitional Council, which has ruled Libya since Gaddafi’s ouster, must step down once the General National Congress holds its first session.
